Welcome to Melanin Poppin' Girls Literacy Group!

Our Mission:

Melanin Poppin’ Girls Literacy Group empowers Black and Brown girls to rise rooted in their identity, culture, and brilliance. Through culturally responsive literacy, leadership, wellness education, and creative expression, we nurture confident, conscious, and connected young scholars.

We create a safe home and affirming spaces where girls grow academically, socially, emotionally, mentally, and physically. Our programs cultivate literacy success, young change makers, positive role models, community care, sisterhood, and holistic healing for the whole family.

Grounded in the 7 Principles of Kwanzaa, family partnership, and cultural pride, we believe every girl deserves to feel seen, valued, and worthy—mind, body, and spirit. By knowing who they are and where they come from, our girls are equipped to lead, dream, and shine with purpose.

The 7 Principles of Kwanzaa (Nguzo Saba):

  • Umoja (Unity) – To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
  • Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) – To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves.
  • Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) – To build and maintain our community together and make our sisters' and brothers' problems our problems—and solve them together.
  • Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) – To build and support Black-owned businesses and share in the work and wealth of our community.
  • Nia (Purpose) – To make our collective purpose the building and developing of our community to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
  • Kuumba (Creativity) – To do as much as we can to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
  • Imani (Faith) – To believe with all our heart in our people, our families, our leaders, our teachers, and the righteousness of our struggle.

We believe that when our girls are nurtured in their minds, hearts, and roots—they rise with resilience, pride, and power. Together, we plant seeds of greatness and grow generations of radiant young change makers!

"Yet, in Melanin Poppin every girl gets an opportunity to participate in their own way because of the small group, and every girl can bring her own complexity and personality without racist stereotypes impacting their success. The group embraces the intersectionality that my daughter carries with her everywhere. This group chips away at the systemic racism that impacts every black girl in American education by creating a space committed to black empowerment. Melanin Poppin has created a space where my daughter can feel good in school, and this will impact her education for the rest of her life. My hope is since my daughter knows what a safe space feels like in Melanin Poppin she will seek more spaces out where she can thrive in education .

"She not only loves the environment to be herself true authentic self, but loves Mrs Nia and all her MPGLG sisters. When she sees herself she sees greatness in who she is and what she represents. Thank you Mrs Nia for everything.
